Rabbits (Year 1) - Mrs Walker's and Mrs Swanston's Class

Welcome to Rabbits. Your teachers are Mrs Walker and Mrs Swanston. Mrs Walker loves teaching Phonics, Reading, PE, RSHE and creative activities, and also enjoys reading stories. Mrs Swanston's favourite time of the day is also story time. She is always on the lookout for an exciting new book to share with the children and can often be found immersed in a good book with a group of children in our reading area.

We are also very lucky to have lots of lovely adults working in the Year 1 area – Mrs Rice teaches in the other Year 1 class and we also have Mrs Greaves,  Mrs Tryner and Mrs Mason who are the support staff working in the area on different days across the week.

At the beginning of Year 1 we operate in a similar style to Foundation with some taught sessions for Phonics, Maths, English and RE, and Continuous Provision to cover other areas of the curriculum. So, there are plenty of opportunities to learn through play as well as learning in a more formal style. As the year progresses, we move towards a more formal style to get the children ready for life in the rest of the school. Throughout the year, we also have a weekly PE session and a weekly session in our lovely woodland.

We cover some wonderful topics in Year 1 including learning out about different traditional tales, discovering more about our local area now and in the past and thinking about our place in the community, exploring life in the Arctic Circle and finding out about different living things with a focus on how we can be responsible and take care of our world. We have lots of opportunities for art, drama, design technology, music, speaking and listening, computing and RSHE within these topics.

We are all looking forward to a very exciting year with you.
