Active Spelling - Year 2 - Year 6
In Key stage 1 and Foundation, children are taught phonics/ spellings daily for a
minimum of 20 minutes.
Year 2 – 6 have daily Active Spelling session of 15 minutes. These sessions follow the same format throughout school: Recall, Learn, Check, Apply.
Spelling homework is not sent home, however key words may be sent home for the
children to practise and learn. Y2-6 use Spelling Shed to practice their words for that week.
Each class has a spelling display which enables children to use a variety of strategies to help the remember spellings correctly and remind them of the strategies available to them to help spell correctly:
Phonology: how the words sounds.
Orthography: how the word looks.
Graphology: how we write the word.
Morphology: the meaning of the word.
Eytmology: where the word has originated from.
