Swimming Review 2021-22
The National Curriculum states:
‘All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations’.
At our school, every pupil receives swimming instruction for 9 weeks during Year 3. Pupils then receive a further 9 weeks of swimming instruction during Year 4 at The Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.
Whilst many of our children are experienced and proficient swimmers, the following table aims to show the statutory requirements achieved by our current Year 6 cohort.
Required skill | Percentage of children achieved |
Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
| 85% |
Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke].
